The ISAK Accredited Skin Fold Process: Ensuring Accuracy & Reliability

Our skin fold assessments strictly adhere to the internationally recognised protocols developed by ISAK. This commitment to a standardised methodology ensures that the data we collect is both accurate and reliable, allowing for meaningful comparisons over time.

Will Jenkins is a Level 1 ISAK accredited professional, meaning he is trained and certified in precise measurement techniques. During your assessment, callipers are used to gently measure skinfold thickness at specific, standardised sites on the body – typically an 8-site protocol is used to provide a comprehensive overview. The process is non-invasive, relatively quick, and conducted with utmost respect for your comfort and privacy in a professional clinical setting.

Your Comprehensive Body Composition Report: Beyond the Numbers

Following your skin fold assessment, you won’t just receive raw data; you’ll get a detailed report designed to provide you with valuable and actionable insights. This comprehensive summary is a powerful tool to help you understand your body and effectively track your progress.

Your report includes:

  • Body Fat Percentage (%BF): A clear, calculated measure of your overall body fat, providing a key indicator of your body composition.
  • Somatotype Report: An analysis of your current physique type (endomorphy, mesomorphy, ectomorphy), which can be useful for understanding your body’s characteristics and tailoring training or nutrition approaches, especially for athletes.
  • Body Mass Index (BMI): Calculated as a standard reference point for health.
  • Waist-to-Hip Ratio: An important indicator of body fat distribution and potential health risks.
  • Sum of 6 Skinfolds & Sum of 8 Skinfolds: These are key metrics often used by athletes, coaches, and trainers to precisely monitor changes in subcutaneous fat over time, providing a sensitive measure of progress.
  • Individual Skinfold Values: The raw data from each measurement site is provided, allowing for precise tracking of changes at specific areas of your body.
  • Overall Body Composition Summary: A clear overview of the relationship between your fat mass, estimated muscle mass, and height, giving you a complete picture of your current physical makeup.

This detailed feedback empowers you to make truly informed decisions about your training programs and nutritional strategies, in collaboration with your health professionals.

Who is Skin Fold Analysis Ideal For?

Skin fold analysis provides the most accurate and beneficial insights for:

  • Athletes: From competitive bodybuilders and strength athletes to endurance runners and team sports players looking to optimise their physique and performance.
  • Fitness Enthusiasts: Individuals dedicated to their fitness journey who want precise tracking of their body composition changes resulting from training and diet.
  • Individuals with Specific Physique Goals: Those aiming for targeted muscle gain or fat loss who require accurate monitoring.

Please Note: While highly accurate and reliable for individuals who are generally lean or carry less subcutaneous fat, skinfold analysis may be less suitable for the general population with higher levels of body fat. For these individuals, other body composition indicators (like waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio) are often utilised effectively within our comprehensive Dietetic Consultations to assess health and guide nutritional strategies.

Preparing for Your Skin Fold Assessment

To ensure the most accurate results from your skin fold analysis, please follow these simple guidelines:

  • Maintain Normal Hydration: Drink water as you normally would leading up to your appointment. Avoid excessive fluid intake or dehydration.
  • Avoid Strenuous Exercise: Refrain from intense workouts for at least 4-6 hours (or ideally on the day of) prior to your assessment, as this can temporarily affect fluid distribution and skinfold thickness.
  • No Lotions or Oils: Please do not apply lotions, creams, or oils to your skin on the day of your assessment, as this can make the skin difficult to grasp accurately.
  • Wear Appropriate Attire: Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is ideal. For accurate measurements, you may need to wear or bring shorts (men and women) and a sports bra (women) to allow easy access to the measurement sites (e.g., abdomen, thigh, back, arm). Your privacy will always be respected.
